Background
Peking University has been a CUHK partner for student exchange since 2003 and has collaborated with many CUHK units on student training and research. Its Chinese Language and Literature as well as Linguistics subjects are recognized as double first-class disciplines by the Ministry of Education of PRC China. It ranked the 17th in QS World University Rankings 2024 and its linguistics ranked the 21st in QS World University Rankings 2024 by Subject.
Students of the DDP will pursue the Linguistics major programme offered by CUHK and the Chinese Language major programme offered by Peking University. The CUHK programme emphasizes the study of linguistic theories and explores the similarities and differences among different languages. The Peking University programme focuses on the study of structures of different varieties of Chinese. Students participating in the DDP will not only benefit from the strengths of the two programmes, enriching their training in linguistics, but also widen their horizon through immersing in a different learning environment, enhancing their competitive edge for their further studies and career development.
Study Pattern
CUHK students of the DDP will study at CUHK in their first and fourth academic years while spending their second and third academic years at Peking University.
At CUHK, in addition to the coursework requirement of the Linguistics major programme, students have to take courses for fulfillment of the university core requirements. At Peking University, CUHK students are required to complete courses in four areas, namely, (i) common required courses including Chinese cultural heritage courses and foundation courses of different disciplines, (ii) major core courses, (iii) major elective courses, and (iv) general education and free elective courses.
For fulfillment of unit requirements of CUHK, students will have to take at least 96 units of courses in total including at least 75 units of courses at CUHK and at least 21 units of courses at Peking University for credit transfer, or at least 79 units of courses at CUHK and at least 18 units of courses at Peking University for credit transfer.
For fulfillment of unit requirements of Peking University, students have to complete at least 136 units of courses in total including at least 75 units of courses at CUHK and at least 61 units of courses at Peking University.
Upon successful completion of the graduation requirements at both universities, students participating in the DDP will be awarded with Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics by CUHK and Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Language by Peking University.
Tuition Fee
In compliance with the Interim Guideline on Offshore Teaching and Learning Activities released by the University Grants Committee in March 2018, CUHK students will pay tuition fee to CUHK only and will not be required to pay tuition fee to the partner university.
Hostel
Two-year on-campus hostel will be arranged by Peking University to CUHK students participating in the DDP as far as possible.
Application and Selection
Interested local students admitted to CUHK Linguistics major programme will be invited to submit their application in August in their first year of attendance and attend an interview conducted by a joint selection panel of the two universities.
