In lower school, our NZ teachers, Miss Kate and Miss Amanda have been running kapa haka lessons as an ASAP class to share some of their culture with the students. Kapa haka is a traditional Maori cultural group that perform chants, action songs, choral pieces, war dances and much more. In preparation for our QISS International Day, the Kapa Haka group expanded to include Grade 5 and Grade 2 classes in order to share their practice with the QISS community. The group was also given the opportunity to perform at the Waves event which was a great chance for the students to share their developing skills. The group performed two pieces, a choral piece called 'Purea nei', which is about cleansing and replenishment from nature and a waiata-a-ringa or action song called 'Toia mai' which is about working as a team to haul in a canoe to it's resting place.
